Surry’s Emily Mitchell Named NJCAA Softball All-American
Charlotte, NC – Surry sophomore Emily Mitchell was recently named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American in softball capping off a remarkable season that helped propel the Lady Knights to a 5th place finish in the NJCAA World Series. Mitchell earned Second Team Utility honors after a standout season both in the circle and at the plate.
A native of Walnut Cove and graduate of South Stokes high school, Mitchell has been a cornerstone of Surry's softball program the last two seasons. Splitting time between the pitcher's circle and the outfield, she posted an impressive .401 batting average with 6 home runs and 45 RBIs across 52 games. Her dominance was not limited to the batter's box—Mitchell also delivered clutch performances on the mound, including two complete-game victories in the Appalachian District Championship that helped Surry clinch a spot in the NJCAA Division III Softball World Series. In addition, Mitchell earned the win in the circle against Community College of Rhode Island in the World Series to improve to 15-8 overall with a 3.84 earned run average. She also had 14 complete games in 158 2/3 innings pitched with 129 strikeouts.
Mitchell was also named to the Region 10 Division III Softball First-Team as a utility player helping lead the Lady Knights to the Region 10 Championship. Her accolades over the past two seasons have extended beyond the diamond. Last year, she was named to the NJCAA All-Academic Second Team posting a grade point average above 3.80. In both academic years at Surry, Mitchell has earned Region 10 All-Academic honors with a grade point average above a 3.0.
Off the field, Mitchell has volunteered with Special Olympics along with being a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at Surry. Mitchell plans to continue her education while pursuing a career in sonography.
