
Surry Softball Advances to NJCAA Division III World Series
University Center, MI – The Surry Softball team advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III World Series after defeating Delta College, 3-1 on Sunday in the deciding game of a best of three series in the Appalachian District Tournament. The Lady Knights broke a 1-1 tie after the first inning scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the final score. Surry's Emily Mitchell pitched a complete game allowing one earned run off eight hits while striking out six without allowing a walk. The Surry offense was led by Jackie Morgan, Jordan Snow, and Emma Sorrell with each collecting a hit and driving in a run. Mitchell and Isabella Aparicio each added a hit while scoring a run.
In the series opener on Saturday, the Lady Knights collected a 5-2 win behind a complete game effort from Mitchell. The sophomore allowed only two earned runs while giving up seven hits and striking out nine. The Lady Knights pounded out ten hits with Aria Wilson, Mitchell. Sorrell, and Morgan collecting two hits each. Wilson, Aparicio, Mitchell, Chloe Edwards, and Morgan each drove in a run while Wilson, Aparicio, Mitchell, Sorrell, and Carlee Jones scored a run.
The Lady Knights dropped the middle game of the series, 5-3 to the Lady Pioneers. Carley Joyner took the loss throwing six innings while allowing only two earned runs off seven hits while striking out four and walking one. Jones pitched an inning allowing two earned runs off three hits. Offensively, Surry was led by Chloe Edward with a hit, run scored, and RBI.
Surry will travel to DeWitt, New York for the NJCAA Division III World Series starting on Wednesday, May 21. The Lady Knights will find out their opponent on the NJCAA Selection Show which will be broadcasted live on the NJCAA Network on Tuesday, May 20 at 3:00 pm Surry made their last World Series appearance at the NJCAA Division II World Series at Clinton, Mississippi in 2015.
