Surry FCA Sends Care Packages to Northern Residents

Mount Airy, NC – The Surry Community College Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) recently collected, packed, and delivered gift bags to the long-term residents at Northern Regional Hospital of Surry County.

"Our FCA members decided they wanted to continue with helping brighten the holidays for permanent residents at Northern Regional," stated Surry Athletic Director, Mark Tucker. "Our group took on this project last year with the goal of spreading some Christmas cheer to each of the residents, and continued it again this year."

Gina Gammons, Activity Director at Northern Regional Hospital said the residents were very grateful of the thoughtfulness from the FCA members.  "Our residents enjoyed receiving their gift bags from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes members.  Northern Skilled Unit is blessed to have the support of the community all through the year and especially at Christmas."

The care bags, thoughtfully assembled by FCA members, are designed to provide comfort and essential items to residents at Northern Surry Hospital. Each bag contains personal care items, snacks, and other necessities that can enhance the daily lives of individuals receiving long-term care. Last year, each resident received a large print Bible.  The effort reflects a broader mission to foster compassion and support within the community, particularly for those facing health challenges.

"Our FCA members also included a personal hand-written letter of encouragement to each of the residents," Tucker said.  "Our group was able to get items donated, and in some cases purchased items out of their own pocket.  It certainly shows how much compassion these students have for others."

Tucker added, "Our FCA group member's involvement in this project highlights the athletic department's role in promoting service-oriented values among our students.  By engaging in these initiatives, our student-athletes learn the importance of giving back and supporting those who may be less fortunate.  This aligns with the college mission which emphasizes not only academic excellence but also personal growth through community engagement."

Since 1954, Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high, and youth levels to use the powerful platform of sport to reach every coach and every athlete with the transforming power of Jesus Christ.  FCA focuses on serving local communities around the globe by engaging, equipping, and empowering coaches and athletes to unite, inspire, and change the world through the gospel.
