Surry Student-Athletes Inspire Fifth Graders at Rockford Elementary

Dobson, NC – Recently, student-athletes Emma Sorrell, Lucas Graham and Jackson Greene from Surry Community College took the time to volunteer at Rockford Elementary School.  Their visit aimed to engage fifth grade students in discussions about sportsmanship and healthy competition, key values that are essential both in sports and in life.  "Our student-athletes commitment to volunteering in the community not only enriches the lives of young student, but also exemplifies their role as a positive role model," stated Surry head baseball coach, Tim Collins.

During their interaction with the students, Sorrell, Graham, and Greene emphasized the significance of sportsmanship.  They explained that good sportsmanship involves respecting opponents and officials along with playing fair, and maintaining a positive attitude, regardless of the outcome of the game.  Sorrell highlighted that these principles not only apply to sports but also to everyday interactions, encouraging students to carry these values into their daily lives.

Surry's Lucas Graham shared insights on healthy competition, stressing that it should be about personal growth rather than just winning.  He encouraged the students at Rockford to focus on improving their skills and supporting one another, fostering a community where everyone can thrive.  Jackson Greene added that competition can be a powerful motivator when approached positively, helping individuals push their limits while still being supportive of their peers.

The event at Rockford Elementary was extremely positive with students being inspired by the messages shared by Sorrell, Graham, and Greene.  "This was an extremely successful event and we appreciate the opportunity to be a part of it," stated Surry head softball coach, Blaine Bullington.

This past spring, Surry student-athletes volunteered with the Reading Across America program and Special Olympics.
